Tour Description

Your Alaska adventure begins with a scenic drive along Turnagain Arm from Anchorage, with magnificent views of the Chugach and Kenai mountain ranges. Your guide will provide opportunities for photo stops as they share this stunning area’s interesting history and geology. Turnagain Arm boasts the second-highes tides in North America (Bay of Fundy is the first), and is home to our nation’s only bore tide.

At Portage Depot, board the historic Alaska Railroad Glacier Discovery Train and enjoy a deli lunch during the short but scenic ride to Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. From there, we’ll transfer to Spencer Glacier Lake via a one-mile shuttle bus ride.

At Spencer Glacier Lake, you’ll be wowed by the floating icebergs during the leisurely paddle tour of this pristine glacier water from sea kayaks. Capture plenty of photos during this extraordinary experience in Alaska’s wilderness environments away from the crowds.

The Spencer Whistle Stop and glacier are located just south of Portage Valley and Turnagain Arm in the Kenai Mountains and Chugach National Forest. This remote wilderness area is only accessible by train, and is home to one of the most spectacular and visible glaciers along the Alaska railbelt: Spencer Glacier, a massive wall of ice cascading down the mountains to deep blue Spencer Lake.

After our kayaking experience, we’ll flag down the train and ride back to Portage for a return to Anchorage by about 6:30 p.m. An optional return to Anchorage aboard the train is available for $58 extra p/p. This option arrives in Anchorage at approximately 9:30 p.m.
