Greatland Adventures Guide: Meet Matt

Greatland Adventures Guide: Meet Matt

A regular series introducing the professional guides who help make Greatland Adventures a success.

How many people can claim an entire landscape as their office? Greatland Adventures guide Matt can; in fact, it’s one of his favorite things about working for a company that prides itself on hiring only Alaskans who have experience in the wild places and open spaces of the Great Land.

Matt became a Greatland Adventures guide after a friend asked for some additional guide help on a tour at Hatcher Pass. A rock climber, Matt enjoyed assisting his friend (especially at one of his favorite locations) and learned that Greatland was hiring. The rest, of course, was history.

Like other members of the Greatland Adventure guide team, Matt appreciates the value of hiring locals to show Alaska off on the myriad year-round tours offered by the company.

“I like that they treat staff really well, and that all of us are from Alaska and live here,” he says. “This makes for happy guides who really like to share their home state and experiences with guests.”

That appreciation extends to the places Matt takes visitors; from the three-hour Anchorage city tour to Matanuska Glacier, or farther south toward Seward or Whittier. Every day is a piece of a grand adventure, according to Matt, no matter the season. Matt encourages visitors to give winter in Alaska a try, especially out at the Matanuska Glacier, where the snow is clean, pure, and, in his words, “really beautiful.”

But his biggest adventure right now? Being a dad.

“I can’t wait to introduce my daughter to mountain biking soon,” he said.
